Hit It! Sweet Soul Music Of The Ike And Tina Turner Revue: Live In '74

The Ike and Tina Turner Revue toured as a duo in the late 60's and 70's to excited audiences across the USA.

In these live recordings from '74, they are heard playing at the University of Maine. There is something about a horn section raving over funk and soul grooves that resonates more on a live recording, and Ike and Tina's coked-up rants between songs are hilarious.

In the beginning of "Proud Mary," Tina explains to her audience that she likes to do it "nice and rough," opposed to "nice and easy." I'm not a critic of hyping up the audience in that rock 'n roll fashion, but it sounds extra sensational coming from the soul diva herself. Other songs in the set feature the duo covering pop hits, including the Beatles' "Get Back" and a comical rendition of the Shaft theme song.

On a side note, Ike Turner died yesterday at age 76. Shortly before his death he was tossing around ideas with Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley about a new project.
