Garage Upheaval! Waking Up The Myddle Class

Garage Upheaval! Waking Up The Myddle Class

The Myddle Class were revered as The Rolling Stones of suburban New Jersey for a period in the mid 60's. The Velvet Underground opened for these guys in 1965 at a high school (this concert debuted The Velvet's androgynous new drummer, Maureen Tucker.) Unfortunately for The Myddle Class, half of their audience was scared off prior to their set by the loud, black-clad weirdos.

This is interesting to note since early on "The Myddle Class had been fired from three New York discoteques for playing too loud."

However, The Myddle Class were ultimately more focused on rocking pop songs in the vein of The Beatles or Bob Dylan rather than challenging their audience's eardrums. They even forged Dylan's, rather one-dimensional folk of "Gates of Eden" into a lush, spirited garage rocker.

The Myddle Class reached the pinnacle of fuzziness with their regional hit, "Don't Let Me Sleep Too Long". The brief, out-of-control guitar solo is almost as loud and dirty as Lou Reed the one on "Sister Ray". "Don't Let Me Sleep to Long" went through a second life when fellow garage rockers The Blues Project did a five-minute rendition, renaming it with the first lyrics of the chorus, "Wake Me, Shake Me".

The Blues Project's version does not keep the same intensity for me as The Myddle Class' original. This is likely due to the longer length and cleaner recording quality of the former.

Sadly, The Myddle Class is yet to re-release their material.

Big fuzzy thanks to Garage Hangover and Raven Sings The Blues for the tunes!
